My story
In Store tasting Lion Japanese Sake

My journey with sake started because of survival.
In Perth, Western Australia, the family Asian liquor store was going under. I
realised I needed to find a way to revive it.
Sake’s reputation and exposure to the Australian market was dismal. Building
awareness to get Australians to love Japanese sake was not an easy task. There
were things I needed to know to build my credibility about Japan’s everyday
fermented rice so that Australian people would become attracted to its culture
and taste.
With great determination to keep my family’s legacy alive, I began to teach
myself about sake. I consistently studied the vast Australian (liquor) market
because it was important to me that I promote sake with a sound understanding
of its background for it to gain approval.
Along my journey I have created strong relationships directly with sake
breweries. I communicate and work together with vendors so that well known
Japanese Sake brands are brought alive to Perth.
My family has a history of welcoming Japanese holiday workers into our
business. One of my responsibilities was to train them for the jobs that our
business provided. Japanese people and culture has been and continues to be an
important part of my life from when I was a young girl.
It is from passion, spirit, and dedication that I have made my mark in the sake
market and established my own business, ‘Kodawari Sake Education.’ Through
my business, sake’s awareness has spread and become more popular all over
Perth. Creating sake tasting and degustation events has generated curiosity and
a bigger audience.
I am no stranger to Japan. My travels take me to Japan up to twice a year. Here,
I catch up with sake comrades and business associates within the sake industry.
Doing this inspires my passion, continues connection, and furthers my
experience with Japanese culture. My connection and experiences go further
afield since, prior to working in ‘Liquor business’, I was operating and
managing the biggest range of Japanese, Korean & Southeast Asian food
groceries in Perth.
Read my story how I raised sake awareness within Australia here.
During the Covid epidemic I went live online to provide sake knowledge to the
Japanese hospitality industry as well to sake learners seeking qualification. This
also grew to include those who wanted to enjoy the Japanese sake experience at
home.
In 2022 September 17th I was given the responsibility to lecture and be Head Judge for 65 judges to prepare them for Australia Sake Awards. The Start of a new Era for the Australian Sake Market.
The Bridge is formed with both Australia and Japan. To taste 56 sakes continuously all day from a range of 200 sakes.Read article recap here
